tortuguero national park
Tortuguero National Park is a national park in Costa Rica. It is located in the Colorado district, in the canton of Pococí, Limón province, in the Costa Rican Caribbean. To the north is the town of Tortuguero and to the south is the town of Parismina. Created in 1970, it is part of the Tortuguero Conservation Area, administered by the National System of Conservation Areas of Costa Rica (SINAC), attached to the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The park protects the most important green turtle nesting beach in the western hemisphere. It is covered by a lush tropical rain forest. Within the park are a series of artificial channels that connect the port of Moín in the southeast with Barra del Colorado, on the border with Nicaragua. Its access is only by river or sea and all commercial and administrative services use "boats" as a means of transport.
